A word on booking entertainment acts....The following information is provided to you, the talent buyer, as the standard operating procedure in regards to booking talent in the entertainment industry. This free information is honest, accurate, and meant to be useful in your personal decision to acquire that perfect entertainment that you desire! When a booking agent, management company, or entertainment act quotes you a performance fee to entertain at your special function, a lot of planning and thought goes into the requested compensation for your particular event. Up and coming professional acts do not make a lot of money as some talent buyers may assume. Unless they are a well known national or international act, the compensation rate paid to most performers is minimal in proportion to the amount of prep time that is needed for an artist to perform their craft professionally. Most bands and entertainers rehearse their shows consistently without compensation. Some of their expenses include rehearsal facilities, electricity, rental P.A. equipment, insurance, and transportation back and forth to their rehearsal studio. These expenses do not include the cost of the entertainers personal instruments and equipment. These artists could possibly rehearse for weeks without an engagement. However, all of these necessities have to be paid for, including promo and press kits that are forwarded to perspective talent buyers such as yourself. When it comes to promo and press kits.....They are very expensive to produce. Even with today's high tech computers and printers in just about everyone's home, quality printing, pictures, and CD duplication is very expensive when you consider that most entertainers need hundreds of promo and press kits to distribute to prospective clients! And please do not forget about all of the ink, paper, envelopes, Cd's and folders, that are required to produce them. So when a representative of an artist quotes you a compensation package for your special event, please do not think that they are trying to cheat or rob you, financially for your particular event. It simply is not true.....Any compensation rate that is quoted to you for your entertainment needs may be sometimes negotiable depending on other possible perks that you can offer to the entertainment act. For instance, overnight accommodations, if the act is coming into your location from out of town. Food, drink and transportation concerns are a high priority when needed. So think about what the entertainment act may require to perform at their peak when you are contemplating their requested compensation! The prices quoted to you may sometimes be negotiated depending upon the artists preparation time, travel expenses, etc. Please remember that an artist is always at a venue one or two hours prior to performing at a gig, so that they can set-up, sound check, etc. Plus, they may be at a venue one or two hours after a performance, tearing down equipment. You do know the old adage, "You get what you pay for." This is the same advice to be considered in the entertainment industry. Equipment, production, costumes, sound and lighting come with a price, so be prepared to pay for it!
